Screenshot Comparisons Wrong - Improve the Visual Quality on your PS3

Apparently a lot of the screenshots and video comparisons on the Web between PS3 and Xbox360 are wrong! This includes some very big and famous review sites (mentioning no names). You may have seen them where the PS3 versions look 'washed out' or have lower contrast and duller colour than the same game shown on the Xbox360. This is due to the default video settings on the PS3 not being optimized for HDMI high definition output. I suppose this is to maximise the compatibility of the PS3 for people who aren't yet using HDMI or have older televisions.

If you are using HDMI you can turn up the quality of your display quite easily by following these steps:
  • Go to the 'Display Settings' in the 'Settings' section.
  • Scroll down to 'RGB Full Range (HDMI)' and click it. Change the setting from 'Limited' to 'Full'.
  • Now scroll down to 'Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White (HDMI)' and click it. Change the setting from 'Off' to 'On'.
That's it! Top quality visuals while playing games, watching video and everything else. You should notice the difference straight away and its a little shocking that the big games review sites didn't already know how to optimize their display settings. Still, at least they have the guts to admit it.
